A coroner’s jury in Meadow Lake has heard from the officer who shot and killed a man on the Clearwater River Dene Nation in 2008.

Constable Jamie Grant told the inquest he felt he was in a life-threatening situation when he drew his gun and shot 38 year-old Harry Haineault.

Grant was chasing Haineault across the reserve when the incident occurred.

At one point the Constable testified Haineault was bicycle-kicking him and then got him down into a scissor-hold with his legs.

Grant testified he tried to calm down Haineault but he simply grew more aggressive.

He also became worried Haineault was going to keep him from drawing his gun or might try to take the gun himself.

It was shortly after that the shot was fired that ended Haineault’s life.

A video from a security-camera was also played showing Haineault running through the reserve.

He was the only person visible in the short-clip.
