A preliminary hearing began today for a former high-ranking civil servant originally from northern Saskatchewan.

Just over twenty people filed into Prince Albert Provincial Court this morning as the matter involving Murdoch Carriere entered its first day of proceedings.

Carriere, the former director of the province’s forest fire control centre, faces six counts of sexual assault.

His actions allegedly took place against a number of women during his tenure as a civil servant.

Late last year a government report detailing the allegations went public and Carriere was fired from his job.

This morning, Crown prosecutors and defense teams took turns calling witnesses and submitting evidence.

Through it all, Carriere sat quietly, writing down notes on a sheet of paper and conferring with family members.

A court order prevents the public release of any of the evidence or testimony submitted today.

The hearing is expected to take all week.
