The federal government is closing down a section of its website devoted to Aboriginal services and news in the country.

Located at aboriginalcanada.gc.ca, the site has been operating for many years now and offers a wide range of news and links to its readers.

This includes information on how to apply for Indian status, program funding details and a section devoted to climate change and how the Aboriginal affairs department is working to protect the environment.

A note on the site says the government is closing it down on Feb. 12.

No one from Aboriginal affairs was available to speak on the issue but in an e-mailed response the department says it’s making the move because it doesn’t want to duplicate services with other departments.

It also says there are a wide variety of online sources available to Aboriginal Canadians these days and there is no longer a need for a dedicated portal site.
