A national prisoners’ rights group is calling for a public inquiry into the death of a female inmate at the Saskatoon Regional Psychiatric Centre on Sunday after allegations calls for help went unattended.
Elizabeth Fry Society spokesperson Kim Pate says her organization received calls from inmates at the institution claiming prison officials did not give medical attention to 35-year-old Kinew James for up to an hour, even after a distress button was pressed in her cell.
Correctional Service Canada spokesperson Jeff Campbell says James’ death is under investigation and the department will not comment on the allegations.
Pate says James suffered from diabetes.
Later in the day, Saskatchewan’s chief coroner announced an inquest into James’ death will be held but groups are still pushing for a full public inquiry.
