A Regina charity is encouraging people to sign up for a walk during a cold night to raise money to help at-risk inner city youth.

It is called, “The coldest night of the year walk,” and it takes place Feb. 23.

The event is hosted by Youth for Christ which is hoping to raise $30,000.

Youth for Christ runs group homes in Regina and the Battlefords as well as a number of inner city programs aimed at giving direction and guidance to youth who are at-risk of making bad life choices.

Event organizer, Byron Toth says getting people excited about another walk for charity is a challenge but says this one is a little different.

“Part of our walk is right through a residential area and you get to see what it is like for people who don’t have a home or have a place they can call a home,” he says. “Because other people are going to be walking into their home, you see the lights turn on, it’s starting to get dark outside and you get a bit more of a feeling of what it’s like not to have that opportunity.”

This is the second year for the event in Regina and a similar walk will take place in the Battlefords.

People can go two, five or 10 kilometers and they can register online by logging on to “coldest night of the year walk.”

Toth says nationally the event hopes to raise a million dollars which will be used to help the hungry, homeless and hurting.

Thirty-nine Canadian cities will take part this year and that’s more than double last year’s participants.
