The doors of a temporary homeless shelter in North Battleford are remaining open until April thanks to a new cash injection.

The Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Development Corporation has provided the shelter with a $13,000 grant but its future still remains uncertain.

This is because the Battlefords Indian and Métis Friendship Centre says it won’t run the homeless shelter next winter.

The friendship centre says the shelter has become too risky for staff due to the mental health issues of some clients.

Friendship Centre Executive Director Janice Kennedy says homelessness is an issue the entire community needs to work on.

The shelter was scheduled to close next Monday, due to a lack of funds.

This year the Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Development Corporation has been the sole organization funding the homeless shelter, now in its third year.

It has given a total of $35,000 to keep the shelter running this year.
