About 150 Indigenous high school students packed into the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology’s Kelsey campus in Saskatoon this morning to find out about what future careers may lie in store for them.
The full day event is part of this week’s Indspire awards activities and includes students from all over Saskatchewan and Alberta.
SIAST President Larry Rosia says the idea behind the event is to get Aboriginal students interested in the institution’s programs and hopefully hook them up with potential employers down the road.
“This demographic represents a huge potential and is part of the solution to that challenge of a skilled workforce,” he says. “All employers in the province, in fact all employers across Canada, are looking for the skill sets our students are graduating with.”
SIAST currently has 3,000 Indigenous students, more than any other Saskatchewan post-secondary institution.
