The Federal NDP is calling the prime minister callous and insensitive for failing to call a national inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women.

Status of women critic Niki Ashton says the victim count is 600 and growing and yet the federal government is turning a blind eye.

She says the calls for a national inquiry are growing louder but the prime minister is not listening.

“Despite this growing demand for a national inquiry, the federal government and the prime minister himself are ignoring the calls and trying to change the channel,” she says.

Ashton represents the northern Manitoba riding of Churchill which includes numerous First Nations communities.

Human Rights Watch says comments by Prime Minister Harper and the RCMP fail to address the core issue of a lack of security that prevents Indigenous women from filing complaints of police abuse.
