The dean of the University of Saskatchewan’s college of nursing says she hopes a robot will one day be allowed to treat patients in Ile-a-la Crosse.
Lorna Butler explains the robot in question is really a complex, body-shaped piece of equipment that can perform simple procedures.
It’s equipped with video cameras and can be controlled by medical professionals in larger centres for various procedures.
“So there’s no reason why we should be flying people to Saskatoon for follow up visits and consultations when we have this equipment here that can bring back consultation here, for you,” she says.
The clinic is currently located inside a nurses training facility.
However, Butler says all that’s required is for the health region to move the robot over to the clinic.
The robot was officially named “I L expert” or “Pert” for short on Monday.
