The chief of the Standing Buffalo First Nation has been named the winner of an annual waste award known as the Teddy.
It is given out every year by the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation that singles out an agency or individual for wasting tax dollars.
The federation says Chief Roger Redman took home more after tax income last year than Stephen Harper while each of the six band councillors earned more than Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall.
Chief Redman is taking the criticism in stride.
“I don’t answer to the taxpayers’ federation, I answer to the Standing Buffalo people,” he says. “Like I said before, we’ve presented the audits to the membership, we presented the audits at two meetings and submitted them to INAC and INAC has accepted these audits that we were working within our authorities.”
There is currently a revolt of sorts going on at the reserve located northeast of Regina.
The band’s senate has voted to impeach the chief and council and has called for an election Mar. 16.
However, Chief Redman says the senate does not have that authority to do this.
He also says the band has made significant cuts to spending and the election will be held in September.
