By the end of the month, a huge wind turbine should start generating electricity just east of Regina.

It is a $5 million project on the Cowesses First Nation and it is the first wind turbine project of its kind in North America.

What makes the project unique is its ability to store power.

So even if the wind is not blowing, electricity is still flowing.

Lionel Sparvier is the manager of economic development for the band and he says the wind turbine is state of the art technology.

The huge turbine blades are going up this week, the project will tower more than 240 feet and will be visible from downtown Regina.

The Cowesses First Nation has a 20-year agreement to sell the energy back to SaskPower.

The wind turbine will produce about 800 kilowatts, enough to power about 600 homes.
