The leader of the federal NDP says provinces like Saskatchewan need to look at sharing natural resource revenues with First Nations and they avoid doing so at their own peril.
Thomas Mulcair was in Saskatoon on Saturday for the Saskatchewan NDP convention where he met with Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Chief Perry Bellegarde.
The federal NDP leader says Saskatchewan and Alberta have a legal constitutional obligation to enter into discussions about resource revenue sharing with First Nations and failure to do so will only cause them problems down the road.
Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall says the province is not interested in discussing resource revenue sharing with First Nations under any circumstances.
Mulcair also took direct aim at the Harper government over its handling of recent legal victories by Métis peoples in Canada.
Rather than appealing court rulings that have been favourable to the Métis, such as the Daniels decision, he says the federal government should come to the table and work out a solution as failure to do so will only cost future governments more down the road.
