A First Nation and college in eastern Saskatchewan have entered into a training agreement.

On Tuesday, the Okanese First Nation and Parkland College agreed to work together in a bid to train more students on the reserve.

Michael Cameron is the college’s training director and he says they’re optimistic the arrangement will result in more residents getting their Grade 12, or learning a new trade they can apply in the workforce.

He adds some post-secondary classes could be offered as well.

Cameron says the advantage of training students in a rural setting is that they’re more likely to stay there when their classes are over.

Parkland College offers everything from industrial mechanics and carpentry to early childhood education.

The agreement will be in effect for five years.
