Cumberland MLA Doyle Vermette says the province is doing a poor job of consulting trappers in northern Saskatchewan.

The NDP MLA had some harsh words for Environment Minister Ken Cheveldayoff in the legislative assembly today.

Vermette says the government continues to ignore its duty to consult the harvesters over projects happening within their trap-lines.

He adds the government is also refusing to act on many of the recommendations being given to them by the harvesters.

Overall, Vermette says Cheveldayoff doesn’t seem to appreciate the contribution harvesters are making to the province.

Cheveldayoff takes issue with the statements.

He says he recently traveled to the northern Saskatchewan to talk to trappers and is committed to working with them.

The environment minister adds he recently attended a trappers meeting in southern Saskatchewan where some northern harvesters were present.
