A new survey says negative attitudes toward Aboriginals in Canada are increasing.
According to a survey conducted earlier this year, negative attitudes toward Indigenous people are on the rise – particularly amongst English Canadians.
However, the survey finds attitudes toward Aboriginal people are more positive amongst immigrants than non-immigrants.
The survey was conducted by the Association of Canadian Studies and the Canadian Race Relations Foundation.
The survey also finds one in four Canadians reported a low trust of Aboriginals and Manitoba and Saskatchewan have both the most negative attitudes and greatest frequency of contact.
Rubin Friedman, who is an official with the organization, says by presenting the data they hope to stimulate conversation and encourage increased education on Indigenous history for the general population.
He says there could be any number of reasons for the recent increase in negative attitudes including some backlash to the Idle No More movement amongst non-Aboriginal Canadians.
