A 26-year-old woman from the Wahpeton Dakota First Nation has been charged with first-degree murder in relation to a vehicular death on the reserve Wednesday morning.

Valerie Standing also faces one count of impaired operation of a motor vehicle in the incident, which claimed the life of a 28-year-old man from Prince Albert.

Sgt. Ewen Booth says the victim and the accused knew one another:

“It’s probably common knowledge around the community where they came from — but yeah, they had a relationship together.”

It was around 2:40 a.m. Wednesday that emergency crews were summoned to a grid road on the First Nation to investigate a collision between a car and the victim.

An autopsy is set to take place on Friday.

The name of the victim has not been released.

The suspect is due to appear in a Prince Albert court tomorrow.
