The federal government says progress is being made on the crafting of the First Nations Education Act.

According to an email from Aboriginal Affairs, the department has received hundreds of responses from First Nations about the act.

It’s designed to put in place standards and structures to improve outcomes for First Nations kids in school.

However some groups like the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations are refusing to endorse it.

The government says it’s disappointed the FSIN is not participating in the consultation process.

In addition to its consultations with the bands, Aboriginal Affairs says it has held 23 additional consultations with interested parties across Canada about the act as well.

Ottawa won’t say who that group includes.

At this point it’s not clear what the new system will look like, but it’s scheduled to be rolled out in 2014.
