It seems some bears are waking up from their long hibernation and wandering into La Ronge.
An official with Saskatchewan Environment says it’s been a long winter for the animals, and they may have depleted a lot of their winter fat.
Tim Trottier explains the cooler temperatures and snow cover are both starting to fade, and the bears are starting to move around:
“In the general La Ronge area, there have been a few (sightings). The conservation officers have been responding in the last week or so to some bears coming close to people.”
He adds they likely went into hibernation earlier this year because of the cold weather.
Trottier says it’s typical for the bears to be searching for food at this time of year, and they’ll often head to nearby water sources looking for plants that are coming up.
