Aboriginal people who are living with diabetes can get a lot of information about the disease today in Prince Albert.

The Saskatchewan chapter of the Canadian Diabetes Association is holding its 10th annual Aboriginal gathering at the Exhibition Centre.

Organizer Brie Hnetka says this year’s theme is, “Our Youth, Our Future – Working Towards a Healthier Change.”

She says a lot of the focus is on giving youth the tools to help themselves:

“We know that with diabetes there’s a lot of things you can’t change. Definitely genetics is something you can’t change. But we know there are lots of things, lifestyle related, that you can possibly change to try and prevent or prolong the onset of diabetes.”

She says this means engaging youth in more activities and eating healthier.

Medication, meal planning and advice from elders are just a few of the other topics expected to be discussed.
