A young Metis student has received the University of Regina’s President’s Medal.

It is the highest honour awarded to a graduating student receiving a first degree.

Jenel Markwart is graduating with great distinction from the Saskatchewan Urban Native Teacher Education Program (SUNTEP).

Markwart has already landed herself a teaching job at a Regina elementary school and is determined to make a difference.

She says she was in shock when she learned she won the President’s Medal.

“I honestly, legit, I did not think I would win.  There are so many amazing students at the U of R who are doing amazing work. I was just in shock that I won.  It took me a good week to actually let it sink in. It has only been recently that I am kind of like: ‘Oh my gosh, I actually did win this’.  I am just really excited and very honoured by it.”

Markwart is originally from Prince Albert. Her mother was also a teacher and is now a school principal. Beyond her academic accomplishments, Markwart was recognized for her role as a mentor and volunteer.

A record 1,875 students are graduating from the U of R during the spring convocation ceremonies this week.
