A new Aboriginal learning centre got a little help from the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan on Monday morning.

Saskatoon Public Schools’ Brightwater Eco-Science and Indigenous Learning Centre officially opened its doors thanks to a $1 million dollar donation from PotashCorp.

Bruce Bradshaw, the superintendent of education for Saskatoon Public Schools, says the Brightwater site has significant Aboriginal history behind it.

“It was land that was part of the Whitecap Dakota First Nation,” he says. “I also know that Round Prairie Métis Village, as they were searching for a place to continue with their ways of living, they also set up their town site near this parcel of land.”

Bradshaw adds the PotashCorp grant covers the complete cost of the construction of the building with a little left over for programming.

The Brightwater site is located about 16 kilometres southeast of Saskatoon.
