A northern Saskatchewan elder who developed a Cree language dictionary is being remembered for his knowledge of the language.

Colin Charles of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band passed away earlier this week at the age of 93.

Lois Dalby worked with Charles at the now-defunct Department of Northern Saskatchewan in the 1970’s and 80’s.

She says he played an important role in developing curriculum for northern schools.

Dalby says it was a time before the band school system had been set up, and his knowledge of Cree was invaluable.

She adds Charles was able to communicate the origin of many Cree words.

The funeral will be held Saturday at All Saints Anglican Church in La Ronge.
