A Sandy Bay nurse has been fired after it was discovered she over billed for more than $3,000 in pay, did online gambling while at work and even treated dogs at the local clinic.
The nurse, who worked at the local health centre until July 2012, faces a charge of professional misconduct by the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses’ Association — but has not been criminally charged.
Mamawetan Churchill River Health Region CEO Andrew McLetchie says the region ordered an audit after noticing some discrepancies in nursing salaries.
“Definitely you put a lot of trust into your staff here and I think the majority of time the nurses are doing a phenomenal job and they are going above and beyond to meet the public need,” he says.
McLetchie adds the audit uncovered the nurse was falsely billing the health region for “callback” hours instead of straight overtime hours.
He says the health region takes the misconduct very seriously and has put in place increased employee-tracking measures to ensure a similar situation does not happen again.
The RCMP is also investigating the case.
