Saskatoon lawyer Dan Shapiro has been named the new chief adjudicator of the body that handles compensation for former Indian residential school students who have suffered abuse.
Shapiro, who has served as the deputy chief adjudicator for the Indian Residential School Adjudication Secretariat since 2007, will assume his new duties on July 29.
As chief adjudicator, he will oversee the Independent Assessment Process which directs the work of the secretariat.
Mayo Moran, the chair of the IAP Oversight Committee, says in a release, “I am pleased to welcome Mr. Shapiro as the new chief adjudicator of the IAP. We are confident that he is a worthy successor to Dan Ish.”
Shapiro has a law degree from the University of Saskatchewan, is a founding member of the Saskatoon law firm Brayford Shapiro and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1996.
Outgoing chief adjudicator Daniel Ish announced he would be stepping down from the position in February.
