The Metis Nation of Saskatchewan is coming under attack from a grassroots group that is pushing for change in the direction and leadership of the provincial organization.
Yesterday about a hundred people showed up at a rally in Regina to raise concerns.
Similar rallies have been held in Saskatoon and Prince Albert and at least two more rallies are planned, one in Yorkton, the other in Meadow Lake.
A former Metis Nation Area Director, Karen Larocque says the protests are about accountability.
“It’s not a political slaughter, it is a movement of the people. The people want to take this organization back and that was the big thing for me because that was our mandate coming in. You represented the people who elected you , you represent the grassroots people and to date we have not had an opportunity to do that.”
At issue are planned changes to the organization’s constitution, the sale of assets, spending, and the lack of memberships.
The Metis Nation of Saskatchewan will hold its legislative assembly next month.
Robert Doucette was elected president of the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan last September.
He has said, most of the financial discrepancies have been dealt with and changes to the organization structure make leaders more accountable.
