United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples James Anaya arrived in Canada Monday for a number of events including the honouring of the 250th anniversary of the Royal Proclamation.
Anaya is in Canada for a little over a week during which he will spend time in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.
Anya is in Ontario from Oct. 7-8 before heading to Quebec on Oct. 9.
On Oct. 10, he arrives in B.C. for meetings in the Vancouver area before leaving for Alberta on Oct. 11 and further functions in the Edmonton area.
On Oct. 12, Anaya will spend time in Manitoba.
This part of the trip includes a meeting with Métis National Council President Clem Chartier in Winnipeg.
On Oct. 13, the UN Special Rapporteur is in Saskatchewan for a number of events.
In the morning, Anaya will get a first hand look at a northern Saskatchewan reserve when he visits Buffalo River Dene Nation.
This will be followed later in the day by a meeting with Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Chief Perry Bellegarde at the Treaty Four Governance Centre in Fort Qu’Appelle.
Anya returns to Ontario for further events in Ottawa 14-15.
This includes a media conference at the National Press Theatre at the conclusion of his trip on Oct. 15.
Anaya will also draft a report of the findings of his trip to Canada which will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in September 2014.
This is his first trip to Canada as UN Special Rapporteur.
