Residents of the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation now have some more housing options open to them.

A sod-turning ceremony is being held in nearby Blaine Lake this morning for the pending construction of five homes.

The rental units will offer families a safe, affordable spot to call home.

The homes consist of three single-family bungalows and one duplex.

The province is contributing $600,000 towards the project with the band picking up the remaining $271,000 through equity, in-kind contributions and mortgage financing.

After the five homes are up the two sides say they’re hoping to construct three more units as well.

Provincial MLA Scott Moe says the homes are an important step forward as they continue to develop relationships with aboriginal organizations.
