Dene Gathering Draws Low Numbers from Saskatchewan

A large gathering in Calgary that is uniting Dene elders and youth with their Apache and Navajo counterparts is not getting the desired turnout from northern Saskatchewan.
The event is being hosted this week by the Tsuu T’ina Nation and is called “Celebration of the Twins” — a reference to the fact that Dene, Navajo and Apache people share the same ancestors.
Saskatchewan organizer Allan Adam says only a few elders from northern Saskatchewan communities were able to make the trip — a turnout he blames on a lack of financial support.
The conference is covering topics like elder and youth interaction, treaties, Dene heritage and Dene commerce.
It wraps up tomorrow.
