The Saskatoon Police Service is the subject of a new video that’s making the rounds on the internet.
Unlike many videos on police however, this one is pointing out the positive impact the force is having on the community.
Titled “Return on Investment” the video features interviews with local aboriginal leaders and city officials about the transformation of the Saskatoon Police Service.
Everyone admits things weren’t very good at the police service a decade ago.
The force had gone through two chiefs in the wake of the Neil Stonechild freezing death and other incidents.
However community leaders say Chief Clive Weighill has done a lot to restructure the force with an aim at getting more officers back on the street.
Spokeswoman Alyson Edwards says those efforts have paid off:
“Certainly we’ve seen that the approval ratings among the community at large, and specifically among the First Nations and Metis community, have drastically improved.
So we know we have more work to do, absolutely, but we feel good about the changes that we’ve made and the progress that we’ve made.”
She adds the use of Comstat to analyze emerging crime trends has also proven to be a valuable tool in reducing the crime rate.
The video was recently shown at the International Association of Police Chiefs annual conference.
