A former resident of the Cote first nation near Kamsack wants a community watch program established on the reserve.
Robert Cote is raising the concerns after a home invasion left his 79 year-old mother shaken and afraid.
Someone broke into her home at about two in the morning on Halloween night.
Cote says they cut the phone lines and then made off with valuables including a lap-top computer.
He is grateful his mother was not hurt, but worries she might not be so lucky next time.
“I am worried about not only my mother but all the elders on that first nation. They are easy prey and the crime is getting more violent and something has to be done about.”
Cote blames the rising crime rate on drugs and alcohol.
He says the reserve was not like that when he grew up there.
He wants the local band council to take his concerns seriously and set up a program to help ease fears.
He is also critical of the RCMP saying it took members of the Kamsack detachment more than two hours to get to his mother’s home after last weeks home invasion.
