Three First Nations in southern Saskatchewan have signed an agreement with a major Potash company.

Just a few days ago, BHP Billiton met with Chiefs from the Kawacatoose, Day Star, and Muskowekwan First Nations.

The two sides have formed an opportunities agreement, a first of its kind in the southern portion of the province.

The deal essentially lays out commitments towards education, training and jobs.

It will also help businesses on-reserve get bigger, and also outlines ways entrepreneurs and community-owned businesses can get access to opportunities with the Jansen Project.

In a release the chief of the Kawacatoose First Nation, Darin Poorman, says the deal will help create an environmental and economic opportunity for his people.

He adds his band is striving towards its goal of economic sovereignty.

Kawacatoose, Day Star, and Muskowekwan make up the bands within the Treaty 4 region of the province.
