The Truth and Reconciliation Commission has a new lifeline.
The federal government has agreed to extend the mandate of the TRC until June 30th of 2015.
The commission’s executive director, Kimberly Murray, says the fine details of the extension have to be worked out but that it should give them an extra year to wade through thousands of documents at archives Canada.
The hope is the material will shed more light on what happened at the schools:
“I can tell you we’ve found more records in relation to names of kids that died in the school. We’ve found more records in relation to health issues and health conditions in the school, some very key documents.”
She suspects they’ll find more key records when they move on to other high priority departments like the RCMP.
She adds the extra year will also give the commission time to write its final report.
