A councilor from the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation is voicing her concern about Creighton’s advancement on the list of communities that could someday host a nuclear waste repository.
Last week the Nuclear Waste Management Organization announced that Creighton had moved on to the latest round of consideration while Pinehouse and the English River First Nation had both been dropped from the list.
Eileen Linklater says she and other residents of Pelican Narrows have deep concerns about that idea.
She says so far the Nuclear Waste Management Organization has not invited them to meetings about the plan:
“No contact of any sort to come and ask if it’s OK or invite us to a meeting to put in our input.”
Linklater says the band wrote a letter to Premier Brad Wall saying they don’t want the repository in their area.
She adds a poster campaign will start soon in Pelican Narrows to voice opposition to the repository.
