The provincial auditor wants the Mamawetan Churchill River Health Region to do a better job recording who is filling out prescriptions at the clinic in Sandy Bay.

A review by the provincial auditor found many instances where staff couldn’t say which doctor had prescribed a drug for a patient.

In some cases they couldn’t even find evidence the patient receiving the drug was registered in the clinic.

The report says this increases the change that drugs could be misused or handed out improperly without detection.

Melanie Beal is the director of primary care nursing for the health region.

She says since the problem was detected over a year ago they have started asking for increased proof of identity including health cards and dates of birth:

“It could be asking to see their health card number as well and by having more than one identifier there’s less risk of an error especially if you have duplication of names.”

She adds they also have a nurse coordinator who reviews patients charts and goes through medication records as well.
