The mayor of La Ronge says the lay-off of 120 miners by Golden Band Resources is a big hit for a small community.
The company announced it was suspending operations at three of its mines in the area indefinitely as a result of rising costs and lower revenues for gold.
La Ronge Mayor, Thomas Sierzycki, has already asked the government for help.
He says the job losses will hit hard:
“It does have an implication for our community as well as people that use La Ronge as a resource centre. So we’re making sure that we do what we can in order to make sure tha people are listening to our story.”
Last week, the provincial government deployed its rapid response team after potashcorp issued permanent lay-offs to 440 workers, mostly at the Lanigan mine near Yorkton.
Sierzycki is hoping the government approaches the gold mine lay offs with the same sense of urgency and compassion.
