A young woman from the Pelican Lake First Nation sobbed in court Wednesday afternoon as she tearfully apologized for causing the death of a 21-year-old man outside a Prince Albert bar three years ago.

Danielle Chamakese, 22, cried as she told the family of Daniel Carter she is sorry for the pain she caused.

Chamakese is facing jail time for killing Carter while driving away from Stavros bar in Prince Albert early on the morning of Sept. 19, 2010.

Chamakese was convicted of dangerous driving causing death and failing to remain at the scene of an accident following her trial in September at Prince Albert Court of Queen’s Bench.

Court heard that Chamakese hit Carter with her car as she left the bar.

Carter later died from his injuries.

“I’m sorry for causing everybody so much pain,” Chamakese said in court Wednesday.

Chamakese did not speak with reporters following her court appearance Wednesday.

Carter’s family said the young man’s death more than three years ago has taken a toll.

“As far as I’m concerned, our whole family has served a 38-month sentence already,” said Karen Anthony Burns.

Chamakese is scheduled to be back in court for sentencing on February 11.
