The Prince Albert Parkland Health Region has cancelled a drop-in flu shot clinic after running out of vaccine.

Officials say the shortage was caused by a significant increase in the number of people wanting a flu shot.

Another shipment is expected, but it will have to wait until the weather warms up to avoid damage from the cold temperatures.

The Public Health drop-in clinic at Mac Mall in Prince Albert is cancelled for today.

The clinics scheduled for today in Shellbrook and Big River will continue as planned.

Additional clinics, including some in rural areas, will be scheduled when more vaccine is available.

The latest information on flu shot clinics is posted on the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region website.

Meanwhile a strain of the flu-virus that made headlines around the world appears to be back.

Dr. James Irvine says although there haven’t been a lot of cases in the north so far, they are beginning to crop up and he expects to see more in the coming weeks.

Irvine says this year’s flu includes the H1N1 strain which can affect both young and middle-aged adults.

He encourages people to get the flu shot.

Irvine cautions there is no shot for babies under the age of 6 months.

In those cases he stresses it’s important for family members in the home to get the vaccination so they don’t spread the virus to the child.
