A long-time activist has shelved plans to come out of retirement due to medical problems.

Maurice Kyplain made headlines in the 1990’s after he walked from Ile A’La Crosse to Saskatoon and then from Meadow Lake to Regina to raise money for cancer research and diabetes.

The Ile A’La Crosse resident says he did so because he had lost family members to those illnesses and he wanted to make a difference.

“Tele-Miracle 22 in 1999, I walked from Meadow Lake to Regina in February.  It was pretty chilly but all the walks were completed and I’m pretty happy about that today”

He was planning to stage another walk in Alberta but recent problems with his leg have forced him to back away from the idea:

“I almost lost my leg.  When I stepped on it there was no feeling at all.  I was walking on like nothing.”

He says he’s currently in Loon Lake recovering with his family.
