The Native Women’s Association of Canada says it hopes new research that shows 824 Aboriginal women have gone missing or been murdered will spark fresh debate in Canada.
President Michele Audette says she wants to meet with the woman who compiled the database.
Maryanne Pearce is a civil servant who claims to have cross-referenced reports across the country right up to 2013.
NWAC did similar research that found that 582 women had gone missing up to the year 2010.
Audette wants to compare notes with Pearce:
“It’s good to see that the majority are the same names, the same person. And it would be nice also that we do sit down with this person, if it’s possible, because we have names that she doesn’t have and we can exchange that kind of information. I think, for us, it’s amazing work that she did.”
So far, Pearce hasn’t made any public statements about her research.
Audette says up to seven Aboriginal women go missing or are killed every month in Canada.
