The B.C. Federation is calling on the federal government to address alleged financial irregularities at the Métis National Council dating back to 2012.

In a letter to Minister of Aboriginal Affairs Bernard Valcourt, B.C. Métis Federation President Keith Henry says, “The Federal Government has boasted about managing the economy responsibly, strict budgets at all costs. However, some of the worst mismanagement is being supported through organizations such as MNC and their affiliates…”

The B.C. Federation’s website includes a copy of a Hallux Consulting audit of the MNC dated Oct. 26, 2012.

The audit covers MNC expenditures between April 2008 and March 2012.

The Hallux audit concludes roughly $1.35 million should be recovered by Aboriginal Affairs from MNC for costs that have been identified as ineligible spending.

Some of the MNC spending the audit tags as ineligible includes staffing costs not identified in a funding request or claimed salaries and benefits in excess of the percentage set out, MNC President Clem Chartier’s Saskatchewan legal barrister fees and the purchase of hundreds of copies of books written by Chartier.

No one from the MNC or Aboriginal Affairs was immediately available for comment.
