Students attending the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies got a major boost Friday morning to help them pursue their studies.

The provincial government and Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority are giving 20 scholarships worth a total of $100,000 to both first-year and continuing SIIT students.

Saskatoon Tribal Council Chief and SIGA board chair Felix Thomas says the gaming authority wants to make it as easy as possible for students to achieve their goals.

“What it is, is funding success and that’s something we take pride in, in terms of giving back to the communities,” he says.”

SIIT President Riel Bellegarde adds the cost of higher education is expensive and this investment will lessen that burden and allow students to focus on their studies.

“There’s many challenges going through a post-secondary environment, that journey is a tough one and it just does provide those added resources to make that journey just a little bit easier,” he says.

The announcement was made at SIIT’s Saskatoon campus.
