Hundreds of students, staff and parents gathered at St. Michael’s Community School in Prince Albert for their 7th annual West Flat Pow Wow.

The West Flat Community School Pow Wow was created in partnership with five community schools which are all located on the west flat.

Community school coordinator Therese Gerow says students have been practicing their dancing for months:

“They have been learning, they have been dancing, once a week from January on and they are just so proud to come out in their regalia and show what they have learned.  To be able to do that in front of their parents, their families and their peers — because the other kids from the other schools come out to watch, as well.  It is such a good experience for them.  They are very proud of their culture and their tradition.”

The five community schools involved in this year s pow wow were St Mary Community High School, Queen Mary Community School, Westview Community School, Wesmor Community High School
and St Michael’s Community School.

However, this may be the last year of the event due to a recent announcement made by the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division to terminate all community school co-ordinator positions.
