A 47-year-old woman is still recovering after being brutally attacked, burned and left for dead.
There have been reports that the victim had one leg amputated and that facial reconstruction is expected.
Emergency personnel found her the morning of June 1 outside of Prince Albert’s Margo Fournier Centre.
She is currently being treated in the burn unit at the University Of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton.
Prince Albert YWCA executive director Donna Brooks says she questions why the victim’s story hasn’t been shared on a national level:
“There wasn’t a lot of attention outside of our local media — and it’s a horrific attack against her. And, in my opinion, if it had of been a middle-aged Caucasian woman in suburban Toronto, this would be all over the national news. But because this happened in Prince Albert, this didn’t seem to really get covered a lot outside of our community.”
Last week, 100 community members marched the streets of Prince Albert in honour of the woman, who is a member of the Montreal Lake Cree Nation.
Cards and donations for her and her family can be dropped off at the Prince Albert YWCA.
