Families in Sandy Bay now have increased support thanks to the opening of a new facility called the Breaking Trails Family Place.

The pilot project is funded by the Ministry of Education’s Early Years Branch initiative and had its grand opening last week.

Programming and support include parental education, early learning, family wellness and support and information and referrals.

The centre has been open since January and visits are on the rise.

In fact, 433 community members visited the centre in April alone.

Northern Human Service Partnership spokesperson Rachael Steinke says the programs will ensure community members have access to much needed services.

“It really focuses on ensuring that individuals have better access to services and being a bit of a hub in that community,” she says. “It also really focuses on parenting education, early learning and family wellness and support.”

She says the centre’s success in Sandy Bay’s has led to other northern communities to explore similar initiatives.
