The Assembly of First Nations has decided on an interim leader until a national chief is chosen in December.

Quebec regional chief Ghislain Picard will fill the role vacated by former leader Shawn Atleo, who abruptly resigned in the spring.

Delegates at the AFN’s annual meeting in Halifax approved the move with a vote this morning.

Picard says he first sought the blessing of the chiefs before accepting the position.

“I certainly have the highest regard for the office of National Chief, the highest regard for the office of the Assembly of First Nations, as I do for my own regional responsibilities as a chief of the AFNQL. So, in response to the call, I am willing to accept the responsibility for the time being.”

Yesterday, delegates agreed to hold a vote for a new national chief at the end of the year at a special assembly in Winnipeg.

Picard has indicated he might run in that election.

AFN officials say if he officially enters the race, he will be expected to step away from being the interim leader.
