The federal government is renewing its commitment to fight homelessness in Saskatoon with another multi-million dollar announcement.

Over the next five years the government will invest $5.6 million to the Saskatoon housing initiatives partnership.

This follows a similar announcement in 2012 when $3 million was dedicated to fighting homelessness in the city.

The partnership will distribute the money to local organizations to fill housing needs and support services for people who are homeless or at the risk of becoming homeless.

Executive director, Shaun Dyck says there will be an emphasis on getting people into permanent housing quickly  and providing them with a strategy to keep a roof over their heads.

“I think this money will go a long way to provide more staffing for this case management and  to providing the help that people will require.”

Dyck says the  homeless problem has gotten worse by an overheated economy which has made affordable housing even less attainable.
