The Saskatoon Police Service’s Major Crime Unit is investigating a sudden death that took place in the Sandy Bay RCMP detachment cell area Monday evening.
RCMP say a 39-year-old woman from Sandy Bay became unresponsive in the cell area.
Medical assistance arrived from the Sandy Bay Health Centre, but the woman was pronounced dead on the scene.
The RCMP requested the Saskatoon Police Service conduct an independent external investigation into the circumstances surrounding the in-custody death.
The Saskatoon Police Service will report the results of its investigation to Saskatchewan Justice and Attorney General.
In addition to the independent external investigation, the RCMP has requested the Ministry of Justice appoint an independent observer.
