A 66-year-old man from Wollaston Lake has died after falling through the ice in northern Saskatchewan.

Police say the man and a 64-year-old man were snowmobiling yesterday near Peter Lake when they fell through the ice.

The younger man was able to get out of the water, but the victim did not surface.

The survivor had difficulty finding help, but was able to find refuge at a nearby cabin.

An RCMP officer and four members of the Wollaston Lake Ranger Patrol flew up to the location of the incident this morning to look for the missing man.

The RCMP says the man’s body was located this afternoon, five feet from where he was last seen.

The victim was located beneath the ice and had to be pulled from the water.

His snowmobile was located 20 feet from the shoreline.

His name has not been released.

The RCMP wants to thank the Wollaston Lake Ranger Patrol for its assistance in the search.

Meanwhile, an injured snowmobiler had to be airlifted from a remote area in Wollaston Lake yesterday for medical assistance.

Police say the 22-year-old man and four others were travelling to a remote area where they planned to snowmobile back after the ice froze.

The man was injured by a tree branch and needed medical assistance.

Mandy Maier, spokesperson for the RCMP, says they were able to locate a beach on Snowshoe Island to safely land a helicopter.

“The helicopter was able to land and extricate the male and take him back to Wollaston Lake for medevac assistance.”

The four remaining people did not need medical assistance and remained on the trip.
