Fond du Lac Residents Vote on Election Guidelines

A referendum is taking place today concerning a new Election Act in Fond du Lac.
Prince Albert Grand Council northern vice chief Don Deronger hopes the new act will help close loopholes that have dogged past elections on the Far North reserve.
In late October, he and others held consultation meetings with the residents in an attempt to come up with a clearer and more solid election framework.
Deronger says terms of office, voting procedures and the introduction of an executive act are just a few of the major areas that have been addressed through the legislation.
As well, the act calls for nominations to close 14 days ahead of the voting date to give the chief electoral officer enough time to determine if everything is happening correctly and if all the candidates are eligible.
Deronger says these moves should help strengthen the legitimacy of the band’s imminent election and hopefully eliminate controversy.
Every band member over the age of 18 is eligible to cast a vote.
