A piece of property owned by the Saulteaux First Nation in Cochin has been granted urban reserve status.

The move means status Indians heading to the Cochin Convenience Centre will be able to buy gasoline, tobacco and other items tax-free.

Indian Affairs spokesman James Parker says the creation of the reserve is a good economic development opportunity for the community.

There are 20 urban reserves in Saskatchewan and more than 160 urban reserves across the country.

The first urban reserve was created in Prince Albert in 1982.
